VA Loans for Military Veterans are taking too long to underwrite and get approved!

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

Most of the year 2010 has been easy sailing for most of the approved VA lenders at LowVARates.com.  The mortgage industry had purged out most of the bad apples (Lenders that were doing bad loans) and left standing are generally strong and stable banks and mortgage companies.

Last year in a press release dated 1-28-09 (Mortgage Industry Faces Huge Bottleneck), LowVARates tried to educate and explain to all military and veteran home owners and buyers that the amount of time needed to process, underwrite and approve VA loans would be substantially longer than normal.

Due to recent drops in VA mortgage rates that have hit historically low levels, the mortgage industry is now facing similar issues to those in early 2009.  One approved VA lender, Flagship Financial Group branch 403 has said the following recently, “In the last 2 weeks we have seen our big lenders like Wells Fargo, Freedom Mortgage and Met Life all drastically slow down in the amount of time it is taking them to get our VA loans approved.”  It is tough because the home owner normally does not normally want to hear excuses and just wants the loan to get done quickly!”  “In all honesty our hands are tied.” said Nate Burt, Loan Officer.

All Veterans and military home owners should understand that patience is needed at times like this.  We looked into the published VA underwriting turn times from some lenders and they have almost tripled from where they were just a month ago.  It is important that loan officers educate and communicate with their clients so as to make sure everyone’s expectations and set correctly.

Military Thanksgiving Feast Giveaway

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

A fortunate Utah military family will receive a FREE Thanksgiving dinner courtesy of LowVARates.com.  Families can apply by submitting a 200-300 word essay to PR@LowVARates.com.

Nov. 3, 2009, Lehi, UT- Thanksgiving Day dawns the beginning of the holidays and represents the season to give.  It’s almost as if giving and the holiday season have become synonymous.

However, the men and women of our U.S. Armed Forces dedicate the entire year in our behalf, giving their lives to ensure our safety and comfort.

This year LowVARates.com has decided to give back to one of our loyal military families through the “LowVARates.com Thanksgiving Feast Giveaway.”

The winner of the giveaway will receive a free family dinner on Thanksgiving Day November 26, 2009.  The restaurant chosen will include an exclusive banquet room for the winner and their family.

Owner of LowVARates.com, Eric Kandell, hopes the contest will give a deserving Utah military family an extravagant Thanksgiving dinner.

“Hopefully we can help a family in Utah receive a Thanksgiving dinner that otherwise would not get one,” Kandell said.  “Everybody deserves a Thanksgiving feast and we want to make that a reality for a Utah military family in need.”

According to the Department of Defense, the U.S. military is deployed in over 150 countries with around 25% of its active duty soldiers serving in foreign countries.

Many military families spend holidays, like Thanksgiving, with a family member deployed on military service.  This can make the holiday season a particularly tough time to have a loved one away from home.

The contest is designed to help a Utah military family to have an enjoyable Thanksgiving Day dinner even amidst sad or tough times.

Families can nominate themselves or another military family in need.  To enter the contest, please submit a 200-300 word essay to PR@LowVARates.com and tell us why the military family should be selected.

 Please include the following information:

1)      Your Name

2)      Address

3)      Contact Information (Phone # or Email)

4)      200-300 word essay

5)      Name of Family You are submitting for the contest (You can submit your own family or another family in need)

“If we can just help one military family have a happy Thanksgiving that will be worth it,” Kandell said.  “We just want to thank the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces.”

The family must be associated or enlisted with the military or they will not qualify for the prize.  All entries must be submitted by November 20th to enter the giveaway.  LowVARates.com will pay for dinner for up to 10 individuals.  Any number more then 10 will not be compensated.

Veterans Dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

I have often wondered why this is an issue for both men and women in the military.  I have never served in the military so I don’t know what it would be like to always be on my guard and paranoid of attack and learning to suppress my feelings and taking orders all the time.  I can imaging for Veterans that it must be difficult to adapt to civilian life after years of service.  In my line of work I get the privilege of working with Veterans everyday and sometimes it comes up in conversation.  So what is going on to help deal with this situation?

Let me refer to an article that was published in Utah to help Veterans specifically to help deal with PTSD.

Dozens of Veterans are up in Park City for a week-long retreat, and they all have a few things in common.  They all suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder.  Veterans back from war are invited to an outdoor retreat to meet others who are also dealing with the memories of war and dealing with PTSD.  It can be intense for the Veterans, but its also a lot of fun!  They are learning how to breath again and relax.  Veteran Erika Vandenberg said, “In Iraq and Afghanistan you were on alert all the time.  You didn’t know who was your friend or enemy, so you were always on alert”.  These Veterans can’t sleep and they’ve shut people out.  “Anxiety around people, being in a crowd, I still have issues with that” Vandenberg said.

The Veterans participate in team-building exercises, learning how to trust and cope with civilian life again, now that they are out of the military.  “Being in the Marine Corp. for six years does a lot to you,” said Veteran Rodriquez.  “You have to hide a lot of emotions and feelings”.

This retreat is a big step for those Veterans who attended and I can imagine that they all want the lives they had before they left for war.

There are things like this going on all over the country and there are support groups that are here to help those who continue to defend our freedoms.

WHAT IS PTSD?

  • You have reoccurring flashbacks and/or nightmares
  • You avoid anything that reminds you of the trauma you experienced
  • You have a heightened state of arousal or anxiety that makes it hard to fall asleep or stay asleep
  • You have trouble controlling your anger–this may or may not include aggression or violence, you just feel a lot of anger
  • You are hyper vigilant–meaning, you are almost always on the alert, looking around, watching other people, etc. as if you were expecting some kind of attack or crisis
  • This does not only affect the Veteran but it also affects their families too.  I know that there is help for this and I also recognize that some Veterans would not take advantage of that help because they might feel inadequate in admitting they suffer from the symptoms mentioned above, especially if they have learned to reject or “hide” their feelings due to the nature of how they have been trained.  The bottom line is this – you cannot let this go and it must be dealt with when its recognized.  A Vietnam Veteran named Randy Vest said it took him 30 years to finally get life back to normal.  This is probably an extreme case because of how the Veterans were treated after the Vietnam War.  The point is, the sooner a Veteran gets help the sooner life gets back to normal.  Look at it like this – Its just like combat, you don’t quit in the middle of it.  You just keep going until the mission is accomplished.

I didn’t want this to be taken as a charity plead for Veterans, I am simply point out that there are things being done to help our countries Veterans who suffer from PTSD.  Many Veterans don’t have PTSD and as far as I know there is no clues as to determine why some do and some don’t.  For those Veterans that don’t then please offer your friendship and advice to those that do.  If you are a Veteran that does then please contact your local Dept of Veteran Affairs and they can help.  Norman Schwarzkopf said “The truth of the matter is that you always know the right thing to do.  The hard part is doing it”

Good luck – we are with you all the way.

LowVARates.com Joins the Hogle Zoo at Military Week

    Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

    By Craig Walton

LowVARates.com donated 250 hot dogs to military personnel at the Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City Utah. Veterans and active military personnel were honored with a number of activities, including the free hot dog.

(Salt Lake City, Utah, July 6, 2009) – Nothing is better, or more American, then eating a hot dog in the blistering heat of July. If you don’t believe it, ask any of the 250 military families who chowed down their FREE hot dog at the Hogle Zoo this past Friday.

In association with the Hogle Zoo’s Military Appreciation Days, LowVARates.com honored our country’s armed forces with the ultimate American gift, the hot dog.

The day was memorable as thousands of military personnel poured through the crowded front gates of the Hogle Zoo to enjoy the various festivities.

As the families entered the zoo, they were surprised with a coupon for a free hot dog courtesy of LowVARates.com.

“Everyone loves a free hot dog,” said owner of LowVARates.com Eric Kandell. “When we heard the Hogle Zoo was honoring our country’s armed forces, we really wanted to be a part of the activities.”
