Top Military Generals of all Time

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

When discussing some of the top military geniuses recorded in the history of mankind, a lot of people have similar opinions, but many do vary. There are leaders that have been very successful for the good they’ve accomplished and others have proved to be tyrannical to their own nation as well as their enemy. It is important to understand both sides so we can learn from our history and build our society rather than experience another downfall.

Some great military leaders might include Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Hannibal, George Patton, George Washington, Napoleon, or Ghengis Khan. They are known for the mastermind of their military tactic and strategies, whether on defense or offense. I will discuss the latter three, starting with George Washington, who we have all heard about.

george wI talk about George Washington being one of the greatest military leaders not because he was the greatest in battle or the most intellectual strategist, but because he was one of the most influential. His soldiers were in rags, starved, and not paid. With this inexperienced army, he still managed to conquer the leading armies in the world and give the United States its liberty.

Washington was born on February 22, 1732 in Virginia. He mostly studied agriculture, geography, military history, mathematics, and surveying when he grew up. He led his first expedition in 1754 where he was forced to surrender. After more experience, he found himself in command of the western Virginia frontier. He then served in the House of Burgesses where he stayed for seventeen years. In 1775 Washington was appointed commander in chief to the Continental army due his is ability to unite the American people. He became well-known for his attack on Christmas night on the British in 1776. His mere army of 3,000 (against 34,000) continued to grow. In 1778 the French declared war on Britain and supported Washington’s men with 7,000 soldiers and 36 ships. They went up against Yorktown and forced the British to surrender in 1781, ending the American Revolution.

From there George Washington became the First President of the United States of America in 1789 and served for two terms. He was very successful setting up civilization in the democratic government. He died at 67 years old in 1799. As mentioned before, George Washington wasn’t necessarily best-known for his success on the battlefield like most military leaders, but his “legacy of influence” and respect for becoming the Founding Father of our Nation is of equal value.

napolean_gary Another excellent military leader is Napoleon I, who ruled as emperor of France for over two decades. He conquered most of the Continent and even had control in part of Africa and Asia. He was able to influence governments and armies all over the world with his ideas.

Napoleon was born in 1769 and grew up as a normal child no different from any other. He first attended a military school as a teenager and graduated at 16, becoming second lieutenant in the artillery. He soon made his way up to the commander position. Due to his victory, he was made general at age 26 and was in command of the Italy army as well. He proved victorious against the Austrians at Castiglione, Arcola, Lodi, and Rivoli. He soon controlled all of Austria and Italy with his army of 40,000. This 5’2” leader was becoming very popular as he become the “first consul” and then declared himself emperor.

After defeating the Austrians in Ulm, Austro-Russian army, the Prussians at Jena, and the Russians at Friedland, Napoleon put into operation the Napoleonic Code. This “Code” assured their rights and liberties, freedom of religion, free schooling, and eradicated feudalism. Still, Napoleon’s ambitions weren’t content. He started blocking the routes of the British and caused trouble with the English. He took over Portugal and eventually found himself in the Peninsular War, with lasted from 1807-1813, and took a huge toll on the French with 300,000 deaths.

Napoleon was defeated in April 1814 and was banished to the island of Elba, where he escaped almost a year later. His freedom lasted only 100 days, when he was again put into exile on the British Island of St. Helena. He died from stomach cancer, or perhaps arsenic poisoning, at 51 years of age on May 5, 1821.

Though Napoleon spread destruction and death at incredible heights, he will always be known as one of the greatest military commanders. He was exceptional at adapting, giving instructions and letting his commanders self-govern themselves, taking chances, and always had his strategies and tactics planned perfectly.

genghis-khan The final great military leader is Genghis Khan, who, at birth in 1162, was called Temujin. He was born in what we call today Mongolia to a noble family, but he went through many early hardships in his life. It wasn’t until 1185 that he rose to power and in time experienced some victories. In 1206 he received his name Genghis Khan while he became ruler over Mongolia.

By 1211 he was in war with the Chin Dynasty, which eventually led them to invade central Asia in 1219, destroying the Empire. His army then attacked Xi-Xia, at which his horse reared up, surprised, and Genghis Khan fell from his horse. Though he kept fighting and beat the Tanguts, the internal injuries soon led to his death in 1227 at age 65.

Genghis Kahn was a military genius due to his brilliant line of attacks and organization. He created one of the most obedient and efficient armies in all the worlds history. Without him there would be no Mongolia—the Mongolians revere his as their founding father. Genghis Kahn managed to rule over the largest empire ever known: the Mongol Empire. He is known both for his military and non-military achievements (Uighur script).

There are many great military leaders in the history of the world—some known for the good they accomplished, and others for their autocratic and oppressive nature. George Washington, Napoleon Bonaparte, and Genghis Kahn are some wonderful examples of military leadership, each in very different ways. They have each impacted and changed the way the world thinks and does things today as we learn from their accomplishments and their mistakes.

American History Of War And Death

(1775 – 1783) The Revolutionary War

Spawned when the American colonies rejected British Parliament as a suitable government and formed the Continental Army, this revolution was the apex of the colonial up-rise. Originally a conflict between Great Britain and thirteen former British colonies in North America, the war escalated into a global affair and eventually resulted in the independence of the United States of America.

AMERICAN CASUALTIES

WOUNDED: 6,188
DEATH: approx 8,000 in battle plus 17,000 due to disease fallout.

The Revolutionary War

(1812 – 1815) War of 1812

While Britain was already at war with France, they attempted the enforcement of a number of trade restrictions between the US and France, as well as, enacted forceful recruitment of US citizens into the Royal Navy. In addition to these annoyances, the Brits also offered military assistance to the Native Americans to impede colonial expansion into the West. As a response by the United States to stand up against what they believed to be “British insults,” the War of 1812 was fought between the US and the British Empire primarily on the Atlantic Ocean and the coasts of North America.

Top 5 Largest Wars of the 20th Century

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

Throughout the ages there have been many epic wars involving millions of soldiers fighting for freedoms and beliefs.  This list includes the top 5 largest wars of the 20th century (based on casualties).  Obviously the list of casualties is estimated, but still reveals the deadliness and scale of the various wars.

1.  World War II:  (65 million)   1939 – 1945

World War 2

The name of the war says it all.  It truly was a “World War.”  Casualties are estimated around 60 to 80 million.  World War II directly affected over 100 countries and produced thousands of casualties in 27 countries.  Hitler’s Germany final surrendered on April 29, 1945 and ended the bloodiest war of all-time.

2.  World War I:  (25 million)   1914 – 1918World War 1

With over 70 million military personnel involved, World War I was one of the largest wars in history of the world.  After four long bloody years, the war ended when the Germans, Russians, Ottoman Empire and Hungarians were defeated.  The outcome would ultimitaley lead to the European unsettle and spawn World War II.

3.  The Great Purge:  (13 million)   1937 – 1938

The Great Purge

Joseph Stalin, leader of the Soviet Union, headed a mass execution of those opposing the Communist party.  Most of Stalin’s enemies and opposers were imprisoned or executed in a two year span.  The Soviet Union landscape and political makeup was established as Communism ruled for the next 50-60 years.

4. Cultural Revolution:  (11 million)   1966 – 1976

the cultural revolution

Mao Zedong, chairman of the “Communist Party of China”, wanted to ensure communism continued, but felt other members of his party were gaining more power then him.  Consequently, he indoctrinated Chinese youth (called the Red Guards) to his cause and attempted to kill anyone that weakened his position.  This started one of the largest civil wars in Chinese history with millions of casualties.

5.  Belgian-Congo Free State:  (8 million)   1876 – 1908

the Belgian Congo Free State

Leopold II was the leader of the war/genocide known as the Congo Free State.  Leopold (King of the Belgians) exploited many industries in Congo and used his power to completely control the economic state of Congo.  Leopold’s reign on the nation led to millions of deaths and eventually was stopped by European and U.S. media applying pressure to Belgian’s death grip.

CONCLUSION

Current society and leaders of nations can and should learn from the mistakes and atrocities of the wars of the 20th century.  Thousands of U.S. troops deploy every year and sacrifice their lives to preserve our freedoms.  Hopefully future generations are willing to sacrifice their lives to prevent these atrocities from plaguing our history.

Best Places for Veterans who have returned from deployment to visit in Florida

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

There are several places in Florida that you can visit if you recently returned from deployment or perhaps are a veteran and want to spend time with either friends or family.

The best family friendly spot would be Orlando Florida. Orlando is the home to Walt Disney World, Animal Kingdom, Epcot, Universal Studios, and Sea World. There are a number of affordable vacation packages which will help you save money and also save on travel time as well. If you have kids they will always be very entertained by the large amount of rides along with a number of different parks within a few minutes of each other. The area is also great for adults or those without children as well. There are a number of extreme water parks in the area as well. Some of the favorites are Typhoon Lagoon, Blizzard Beach, and Wet ‘n Wild. I personally have visited all of these parks in the last 2yrs. They are a blast and definetely a place worth spending time at with your family and friends.

The best place to visit if your looking for a social time and some great food is the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area. I lived in the area for 2yrs and was a great place to live and also an even better place in my opinion to vacation. A very popular place is South Miami Beach. This is where a lot of people go to lay out and also enjoy some great food on Ocean Drive. There are a number of clubs in the Miami Beach area you can choose from along with 5 star restaurants and resorts. In my own opinion i suggest staying at Loews on Miami Beach. It has direct beach access as well as being within walking distance of Ocean Drive. There are a number of restaurants you can choose from like Emeril’s at the St. Moritz, China Grill, 510 Ocean, and DeVito. If your looking for more of a casual budgeted place to eat they have Jerry’s Diner which is right across the street from Loews Miami Beach. My Favorite is the 11th Street Diner which i tried after seeing it on Food Networks Diners, Drive ins, and Dives. Its awesome food and very good priced. Just south of Miami there is an area called coconut grove which is home to a small shopping and eating area called Coco Walk. There are several places to eat and also great shopping as well. Its very accessible and a wonderful place to enjoy both day and night.

The best place to visit if your looking for diving/snorkeling is Key Largo Florida and the Florida Keys. There really isn’t a whole lot in the Florida Keys. Its a very slow moving atmosphere which is nice if your looking to relax. There is one place i would recommend staying in Key Largo which is the Marriott Key Largo Resort. Key Largo is world wide known to be the Dive Capital of the world. There are a number of places in the northern keys that you can snorkel. In Islamorada which is just south of Key Largo there are a number of fishing tours ranging from deep sea fishing to shark fishing. Also a number of Dive Tours are down there as well.  One thing to see that is very popular is the “Christ of the abyss” underwater statue. A number of people say that they have been marked by the statue when they have touched it by in reality its just covered with Fire Coral which burns and leaves a mark for a short period of time. christstatue key largo resort florida_keys_map

These are just a few of my suggestions for vacation after a long deployment no matter what branch of military you are in. All these places are fun and full of things to do ranging from relaxation to having a blast doing whatever you could possibly imagine. I’ve been to these places personally and hope that its something useful coming from a person who likes to travel.

Lastly, if you go here on travel you may quickly find the relaxing lifestyle very convenient for veterans living in florida and you may want to move to florida so be careful!

10 Of The Most Rough & Tough Warriors Throughout History

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

1. Viking Warriors

When you picture a Viking warrior, you picture a large burly warrior with animal skin clothing, wielding a double-sided axe and a freakish horned helmet. With the exception of the horns on the helmet (which historians claim were strictly for ceremonial purposes), you’d be right. Sailors and pirates by trade and hailing from Scandanavia, these broad-shouldered brutes raided and roamed the region on long wooden boats and considered “hand weapons” to be far more honorable than bows and spears – a much more intimate way to kill.

Primary Weapons: Battle Axe and Shield
Secondary Weapons: Sword and Spears
Era: 800 – 1100AD

2. Knights

Immortalized by the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, a true knight is a “gentleman soldier” ruled by integrity and honor. Though they may not be as savage as the rest, they were elite warriors with an unwavering commitment to values, faith, loyalty, courage and stewardship over the weak. Universally skilled horsemen, they wore ironclad armor, enclosed helmets and chainmail as they fought fearlessly with swords and pride.

Primary Weapons: Swords and Shield
Secondary Weapons: Spears and Daggers
Era: Middle Ages (400 – 1400AD)

Having a security alarm in your home is important

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Having a home security system is very important. It is a standard in most business and many people now want them in their homes. There are many different options ranging from the simplest system that you can set up yourself to a complex network that must be installed for you. They are very reasonable in cost, while making your home safer and more secure. Here are just a few reasons to consider getting a home security system.

The number one reason to consider purchasing home security is personal safety. If someone is going to break into your house, they are not going to be concerned whatsoever with the wellbeing of anyone in your house. Protect yourself and the people in your home by installing an alarm system to deter anyone trying to break in or attack anyone in your home.

Along the same lines as personal safety, is the safety of your property. Thieves may break in at any time. They may take things of obvious value, such as a TV or jewelry, but also things you may not realize were valuable. Having a security system is going to save you money in this case.

Did you know that having a home security system will also increase the resale value of your home? It is one of the top things that people look for when looking to purchase a home. Adding financial value to your home is a great bonus!

Another way a security system can actually help you save money is that it can lower your insurance! In some cases just having the monitoring device, has been known to lower a monthly payment up to 20 percent. If your home has already been broken into, insurance companies suggest that installing a security system will help lower your rates.

A break in is going to take more than just valuable items. It is going to take away the feeling of safety in your home as well. Giving you peace of mind is one of the main reasons to get an alarm system installed in your home. Knowing that you and your family will be safe at night, and during the day will bring you a great comfort. Even knowing your possessions will be safe while you are away from your home should make you feel safe.

Now it is up to you to decide which kind of security system is right for you. There are many kinds. They vary from a basic alarm that usually include, sensors on the doors and windows, an outdoor lighting motion sensor, and a link to a monitoring service, to the more high tech systems. Some systems include fire detection as well. Many of these can be researched online or you can call a local company. It is important to research based on where your live, what kind of home you have, and what you can afford. Now that you have seen all of the benefits, don’t waste anymore time, and get a security system today!

If you are a veteran home owner we invite you to visit Protect Our Troops, a military charity that is attempting to bring free security alarms to Troops and their families across the nation.

Top 5 Reasons to Choose Mortgage Broker as a Career

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

Why on earth would anyone choose the be a mortgage broker in these hard economic times?  If given the choice with all the issues in the housing market you might think me or anyone else a fool and you might be right.  I am here to dispel this myth and possibly shed some light on why being a mortgage broker can be a great business.  I have been doing loans since 2001, in fact it was right after the 9/11 tragedy.  Before becoming a mortgage broker I managed financial accounts with companies like Sprint, American Express and Fleet credit cards.  I worked for a company that handled these accounts which seemed to be good for me at the time.  I thought that I must work for the “MAN” to be successful and earn a decent wage, but I was wrong.  The company started downsizing and I took a 50% pay cut on my salary.  This was extremely bad for me financially because my wife stopped working and we had just had our first child.  I figured I must make a change because job security working for corporate America was not secure anymore.  Through a family member I started working as a Loan Officer for a company that specialized in nothing but Government Loans (FHA, VA).  I have since stayed on that career path.  Its proven to be more stable than any other job.

I alluded to being a fool at the beginning if one should choose to be a Loan Officer.  I have found out the if you have a niche market and a good business model you can be successful.  Being a mortgage broker has its benefits over working for a lender.  Look at Countrywide, Taylor Bean & Whitaker, etc.  They serviced mortgage loans and they are out of business.  Being a mortgage broker you don’t service your own loans and you are set up with multiple lenders which makes brokering loans more flexible and adaptable to an ever changing market.

Here are my own top 5 reasons to choose a Mortgage Broker as a career:

1.  Job Security – You are not a liability to the company (salaried employee).  If you don’t close loans then you don’t make money and you end up by costing the company nothing.  No one goes to work and says, “I’m not going to make any money today” which is the entire reason we work, so work hard.

2.  Schedule – You can make your own schedule.  Its up to you.  If you take more time off you make less money due to a lack of prospects.  The difference is you are in control, not your boss.

3.  Satisfaction of doing good – Seriously, its great to help Veterans and other families obtain a home.  Its much better than paying rent and its something they can call their own.  Knowing you played a very important part of that gives a certain sense of purpose and satisfaction.

4.  Money opportunity – Once again this is not like a salaried job where no matter how many hours you put in and how hard you work you end up by making the same.  Actually in a salaried position the longer hours you work the less you are actually making per hour.  Being a Loan Officer the harder I work the more opportunity there is to make money.  There is no ceiling, no cap on how much you can make.

5.  Industry Knowledge – Having a full understanding of how mortgages work can actually save you a lot of mortgage interest money.  If you understand how interest works, escrow and your loan program on your own home loan then you can apply the principles you learn and probably tell others to your own loan.

I have recently read on other blogs that mortgage brokers contributed to this house mess and that we have no place in the industry.  I will admit that there were probably many brokers who engaged in predatory lending, but to say that all mortgage brokers caused this would be ignorant.  As a Veteran prospective home owner please do some due diligence to avoid less than reputable brokers.  I owe a lot to this industry and Veterans.  My company specializes in VA home loans and this is our niche market which has been able to keep us busy and in business through all the difficult and uncertain times.

In summary – I would not have changed my career path what so ever.  The last 7 years have been very rewarding.

Army Rangers vs. Navy Seals

Friday, December 18th, 2009

army ranger

Army Rangers main focus is on infiltration by land, air, and even sea. They are in the recovery of personnel and special equipment along with conducting raids. They became a major part of the military back in the 1970’s.

How is an Army Ranger Selected?

There are 3 different ways of being selected or qualifying to become an Army Ranger. These include the following:

RUN TRAINING: This is a more advanced type of training which consists of taking troops out of hostile situations, dealing with explosives, and developing skills for navigation, sabotage, and reconnaissance.

CRAWL TRAINING: This trains the soldier in hand to hand comb, water combat under water, and the use of sticks and fists when in combat.

WALK TRAINING: This type of training includes ambush training, knot tying, and rappelling along with airborne operations.

An Army Ranger cannot graduate without the completion of the three types of training.

NAVY SEAL

Navy SEALs main focus is in sea, air and land specific missions and operations. They cover a lot of Underwater Demolitions, reconnaissance, security assistance,  information warfare, personell recovery, counter terrorism, and defense on foreign land or boundaries. Navy SEALs can be traced back to the bombing of Pearl Harbor as part of their establishment but formally came into play as a part of the Navy in the 1960’s.

HOW IS A NAVY SEAL SELECTED:

To become a Navy SEAL you have to go through a seven month long Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training which has three phases which are;

SCUBA training: 8 weeks of training based in the water, diving, water infiltration, ect…. , 9 weeks of land warfare training, hand to hand combat, training on weapons used, ect… .

INDOCTRINATION: This prepares new trainees mentally as well as physically for the extreme training they are going to be faced with along with the ways of the Navy SEAL.

BASIC CONDITIONING: This is basically an 8 week test of endurance including the famous “Hell Week”.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN NAVY SEAL AND ARMY RANGER:

Rangers normally operate in larger sized units or platoons and have the capability of handling the direct action typeof missions. The Navy SEALs operate in much smaller teams and specialize in covert operations.  Rangers perform military support functions while Navy SEALS have selective roles and don’t get involved in front line combat. Navy SEALs are responsible for unconventional warfare and are trained paratroopers and have the ability to integrate with foreign military. Navy SEALs are more independent and work very well within small groups with no support if needed. They specialize in underwater reconnaissance along with underwater demolitions as well. Rangers are different because they are known to be ready for rapid deployment, can use airborn advanced infantry and fights using conventional warfare.

These two types both are highly skilled specialized forces that tend to overlap each other in their specialties. An easy way to describe the differences though is that Army Rangers specialize in land warfare while the Navy SEALs specialize in anything dealing with water type warfare.

The Pros and Cons of the Military M16 vs. AK47

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

The M16 or current model AR15 or M4 that have the collapsible stock etc.. versus the AK47.  The M16 was developed in the 1960s for first use in the Vietnam War by the USA.  It is a lightweight Aluminum constructed Rifle with a chrome lined barrel that is more accurate than the AK47 but less reliable when put into combat situations when the gun can get dirty.  Because of its design the M16 (AR15,M4).  The .556 bullet which is essentially the same as a .223 bullet is smaller than the 7.62×39 round that the AK47 fires but again it is very lethal in that it travels much faster and more straight than its AK47 counter part.  The M16 (AR15,M4) is a more modern design than the AK47 and it looks more modern as well.  Modern versions of the M16, the M4 have the capability of holding multiple accessories (Laser Sights, scopes, flashlights) that can be put on this rifle with additional piccatiny rails etc.

Now as far as the AK47.  It is by far the most popular rifle in the world.  It was developed in 1947 by a Russian designer named Mikhail Kalashnikov and is still being used around the world. It gets its name from its designer and the fact that most of them are either automatic or semi-automatic rifles thus Automatic Kalashnikov built in 47 is how the name came about. The AK47 is known for its high reliability and simplicity even in the dirtiest war conditions although it is not nearly as accurate as the M16 and its derivatives.  The gun puts out the larger 7.62 x 39 round that is close to a .308 size shell. The AK47 is a gun made out of steel with many having wood stocks and other components for looks.  The AK47 is also has a gas piston mechanism which keeps the powder residue from building up on the insides of the chamber and firing pin etc thus keeping it cleaner than the M16. Both of these rifles are together the two most popular military weapons of all time.
